JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for successfully managing the daily operations of the Health Information Management (HIM) Department as well as the archival, storage, and retention of all medical records. Responsible for setting standards for the quality of documentation in medical records and for the accuracy and integrity of HIM’s departmental/operational records; enforcing medical record completion requirements; release of patient information; privacy and confidentiality of patient records in accordance with state, and federal, accreditation and regulatory requirements; DRG analysis and monitoring; and records management, including setting guidelines for the development, distribution, record-keeping requirements, retention and archival of corporate policies and procedures, and responsibility for maintaining official records on behalf of the organization. Provides support and education to each Business Unit, Clinical Resource Group, Corporate Resource Department, and all other appropriate corporate entities concerning records management, policy and procedure development and distribution, and privacy of health information.
Responsible for health information privacy, confidentiality, and integrity of information
Responsible for oversight and implementation of the HIM Department Scope of Services and related policies, procedures and departmental processes. Provides auditing functions and direction to HIM Department Staff concerning compliance with regulatory standards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Plans, develops, implements, and reviews compliance with state, federal and regulatory agency requirements impacting Health Information Management and related information technology processes.
Responsible for the accurate and timely coding and DRG assignment of inpatient diagnoses and conditions and coding of outpatient diagnoses and conditions according to established criteria and guidelines to ensure proper and timely billing for reimbursement.
Develops and analyzes DRG and case mix reports for senior management review.
Manages performance of HIM indicators. Communicates with appropriate departments and medical staff with respect to indicator status. Acts as a resource to these areas regarding HIM documentation and report criteria.
Provides education about HFSCHIPAA compliance and related policies and procedures.
Oversees ongoing HIM and EMR auditing and compliance monitoring activities in coordination with other compliance functions
Requirements
Bachelors Degree in Health Information Management or Health Care Administration AND
Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) OR
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) Based on successful completion of examination requirements of the American Health Information Management Association.
Minimum 5 years management experience in Medical Records.
Extensive knowledge of State, Federal, and regulatory agency requirements for security, privacy and confidentiality of health information management (HIM) and information technology processes relevant to HIM functions.
Proficient in QI tools and techniques relevant to HIM functions.
Extensive knowledge of Health Information Management policy as it relates to the hospital industry.
Working knowledge of the computerized environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
